Drake Bay, Costa Rica Drake Bay is one of the most remote and natural settings in Costa Rica that tourists will encounter anywhere in Costa Rica. The Drake Bay area has an abundance of wildlife, (particularly birds), combined with great accomodations and friendly people make this one of the most spectacular and memorable places to visit.
Drake Bay, (pronounced Bahia Drak Cay by the Costa Ricans and locals) is only accessible by air and water. Although there is a new road, we do not recommend taking a rental car on it as it is seasonal and rains can come at all times of the year here.
From San Jose to Palmar Norte
-BY AIR(Recommended)
-Two Costa Rican Airlines service the route between San Jose and Palmar Norte:
1. Nature Air-has daily service from San Jose to Palmar Norte. The departure times vary so it is good to make reservations and plans ahead of time.
2. Sansa-also has daily service, however is a little less reliable. More advanced planning is strongly recommended. .
-BY LAND(cheaper, incredible scenery, but much more time)
Private Transfes -A taxi can also be taken. The taxi ride will cost $150 one way for up to 4 people and will also take you 5 1/2 hours.
-Rental Car -Of course you can take a rental car to all the way to Sierpe, and the convenience of not having to wait for planes or buses is appealing to some. However, you must remember that although there is a rough road, specially during the rain season; we do not recommend driving to Drake Bay so the days you spend at Osa will be money wasted on the rental.
3. From Palmar Norte to Sierpe
-Taxi -are usually available from the airport or from the bus stop in Palmar during anytime for the day. A trip to Sierpe will cost you $17 one way for up to 4 people.
-Bus -leaves Palmar 4 times a day. Departure times vary. The trip will cost $1 one way.
4. From Sierpe to Drake Bay -There is no established boat service from Sierpe to Drake Bay, however boats leave the docks on the Sierpe River several times a day for Drake Bay and will be more than happy to give you a ride for a reasonable fee. You can find a boat bringing food, supplies, or other people to Drake Bay (which you almost always can) it will cost about $20 and $25 per person one way. Most boats will be leaving by 12:00; so consider this important issue to coordinate transfers and flights; otherwise you will need to spend the night at Sierpe or paying more expensive boat trip to Drake Bay.
